2.2 Boston as an exciting regional destination
Boston anchors one of the most culturally exciting, diverse and accomplished regions in the nation. Its reputation as a national heritage and educational center is augmented by major cultural institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts, the new Institute of Contemporary Art, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and many excellent small museums throughout the region--many located on or near a college or university—as well as interpretive institutions such as the Science Museum and Children’s Museum. The region’s large number of artists is reflected in its galleries and Open Studios, while its growing ethnic diversity is expressed in a host of parades, performances, and traditional celebrations in Boston and throughout the region. Millions of tourists and residents from throughout the region are attracted to spectacles such as First Night, a worldwide New Year’s tradition that originated in Boston, the 4th of July celebration featuring fireworks and the Boston Pops, blockbuster exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts, and sporting events such as the Head of the Charles Regatta, Boston Red Sox games, and the Boston Marathon.
